Das Projekt
Eine Intel X25-V SSD sollte es sein...Vor gut eineinhalb Jahren wurden einige letzten Thinkpad T61 Modelle AKKU Dell Latitude D520 hierzulande zum Schnäppchenpreis von deutlich unter 1000 Euro, wohlgemerkt ohne Betriebssystem, mit magerer Speicherausstattung und mittlerweile altbackener 2 Gigahertz Core 2 Duo T7300 CPU / NVS 140M Grafik auf den Markt geworfen. Dafür gab's allerdings 3 Jahre Business Vor-Ort Service und als Zuckerl noch ein integriertes UMTS Modem dazu. Es sollte ein reines Arbeitsgerät werden, und so kam Windows XP inmitten der „Hochkonjunktur" von Windows Vista zum Einsatz.
Das Programmverzeichnis füllte sich nach und nach mit mehr oder weniger nützlicher Software, wobei mit der Zeit, wohl auch bedingt durch die in diesem Zeitraum zahlreich vorbei ziehenden hoch-performanten X300 AKKU Notebook-Testgeräte, doch schon hin und wieder das Verlangen nach mehr Power aufkam. Nachdem mittlerweile auch Windows 7 seine erste Bewährungsphase schon hinter sich gebracht hatte, entstand die Idee, den alten Herrn mit einem aktuellen Betriebssystem und einer für einen IT-Redakteur mittlerweile bereits obligaten SSD auf den aktuellen Stand der Technik zu bringen, oder zumindest zu diesem ein Stückchen weiter aufzuschließen.
Die Wahl fiel auf Intels X25-V 40GB SSD. Warum? Da das T61 Sony VGP-BPS8A AKKU die Option bietet, mittels entsprechendem Adapter im Ultrabay-Laufwerksschacht eine zweite Festplatte zu installieren, reichte auch eine SSD mit geringerer Kapazität, um sowohl in den Genuss der spannenden SSD-Performance zu kommen, als auch ausreichend leistbaren Speicherplatz zur Verfügung zu haben. Als Betriebssystem kam Windows 7 Ultimate in der 64Bit Variante zum Einsatz, sprich klotzen, nicht kleckern.
Praxiseinsatz
Zu den erstgenannten Vorteilen einer SSD zählt eine Verkürzung des Systemstarts.DELL XPS M1210 AKKU Gesagt getan. Die Stoppuhr weist meinem alten, zugegeben vollgemüllten WinXP System eine Startzeit von rund 100 Sekunden aus. Im Anschluss ist der Desktop zwar schon sichtbar, allerdings dauert es zusätzliche 30-60 Sekunden bis alle Treiber und Tools vollständig geladen sind und sich die Tätigkeit der Harddisk wieder reduziert.
Auch wenn der Vergleich hinkt, das taufrische Windows 7 schafft den Start bis zum Abschluss aller Ladevorgänge in weniger als 40 Sekunden. Nach einigen Monaten Betrieb, diversen neuen Treibern und Softwaretools, waren es zwar einige Sekunden mehr, die kann man aber ohne weiteres verkraften. Im direkten Vergleich (Windows 7 Ultimate) benötigte etwa das leistungstechnisch vergleichbare Asus UL50VF (SU7300/G210M) mit 320GB-5400U/min HDD rund 70 Sekunden für den Startprozess. Das System compac nx6125 akku war dabei praktisch frisch aufgesetzt.
Auffällig hinsichtlich Performance-Zuwachs wird auch die Dauer zum Start einzelner Programme. So lässt sich etwa der Thunderbird-Mailclient innerhalb 1-2 Sekunden öffnen. Photoshop CS3 ist innerhalb 3 Sekunden einsatzbereit. Office-Klassiker (2007) wie Word, Excel und Powerpoint poppen in weniger als einer Sekunde auf. Ein erneuter Start des XP-HDD Systems erscheint wie Blick in die Vergangenheit: Thunderbird 10-15sek, PS CS3 15-20sek, Word/Excel 5-10 Sekunden. Unser Asus hp pavilion dv6500 akku UL50VF genehmigte sich für den Start von Word 5 Sekunden beim ersten Aufruf nach dem Systemstart.
Apropos Mail-Client. Sie kennen das Problem einer vermissten alten Mail, acer aspire 5920 akku ohne Zuhilfenahme der integrierten Suche nicht wieder finden lässt? Sofern Ja, müssen auch die damit verbundenen langen Wartezeiten die durchaus in die Minuten gehen können nicht näher erläutert werden. Auch hier greift die SSD und beschleunigt den Suchvorgang, je nach Füllstand der Inbox, um ein Vielfaches.
Letzter Punkt wo sich die SSD überaus positiv bemerkbar machte war bei der Win-Funktion „Hardware sicher entfernen…". Während man selbst bei potenten Windows 7 Rechnern oft 5-10 Sekunden auf das Erscheinen des Popup-Fensters wartet, Compaq EVO N610C Akku dies mit SSD in ebenso gerade einmal einer Sekunde.

Which external drive would be compatible for my hard drive?
I have read and heard that when you convert your hard drive to an external drive, it has to be compatible. I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 40gb hard drive. I want to know if there are specific external drives to look for (cheaper the better!). I hope it isn't a problem because this hard drive was from my old pc which was Win XP and my new one that's coming today is going to be Win 7. It does have to be compatible as in size 2.5-typical laptop size or 3.5 inch, typical desktop size and with proper connections. IDE or SATA are the major connection types. It seems your drive has IDE connection after browsing the Seagate site. As far as the external enclosure they are mostly all affordable and will work well for you. However I would recommend to not buy into Thermaltake brand enclosures from experience.
