Frequently Asked Questions...
would my dell pc be fixed if i replace the HD?
ok, i posted the same question on here a minuit ago but here is a more detailed question:
so, i have been given a dell optiplex gx 120 desktop and it has a lot of viruses and it is no longer working. there were many files that are viruses and the person i am getting it from has delelted some of the windows files.
so when you power up the pc, it says some thing like 'pc failed to boot operating system' and asks wether i would like to try again or change the settings.
so i have got a windows xp installation cd and i have bios that i was it to boot up the OS from the cd. but when it trys to boot it fails and still says the same thing.
if formating the hard drive is possible and would make it work, i cannot see how when in bios settings menu.
so could someone please help me out. and if formatting and installing would not work, would getting a new hard-drive work?
many thanks again lol =]
Answer:
If you replace the HD make sure the BIOS will support it - old PC motherboards might not support the large hard drives we have today without an update to the BIOS.
If you have the Windows XP installation discs from Dell to re-install the factory software, you should be able to boot the computer and choose to do a new install. That new install will format the hard drive and any data on the hard drive will be lost as the data from the installation discs is transferred to the hard drive. And any viruses and other malware should be gone too.
If you are worried that the installation might not fully over-write the hard drive, you can get software that will erase the hard drive.
One disk eraser that is free is called Active@KillDisk and is available from
http://www.killdisk.com/
Click on the button "Download Free Version"
You can select versions that boot from a CD or floppy disk or USB drive. I got the version for the CD.
There are other pages that explain how to install it on those media.
When you boot, it does not immediately begin erasing. You have to select it from a menu.

Dell does not make a simple URL link to get to the information you want. http://www.dell.com/
Go to the Dell website and near the bottom, look for
"Support" - "All Support Options" then on the next page
"Support for Home Users" then on the next page
"Support by Topic" "Restore/Reinstall Windows" then on the next page
scroll down to "Step 3: Manual Reinstallation"
then on the next page select Windows XP
wow, a short link !
